Woman rescued from burning Jeep by Good Samaritans after a Tractor-Trailer rear ended her.

December 17, 2009

Vanessa Linares’ a 27-year-old woman is alive but suffered serious injuries after a tractor-trailer rear ended her on Wednesday, December 16th, 2009 and her car burst in flames. She was traveling on the Outer Loop of the Beltway near Route 1 and I-95 around 8:45 a.m. when the accident happened. The impact of the crash pushed the woman’s Jeep about 75 yards and ruptured the vehicle’s fuel tank.

Linares’ was dazed after the crash and was unable to get out of the Jeep herself because her foot was stuck underneath one of the pedals and the doors were jammed shut. This is when Good Samaritans Evan Werner and John Brown saw the car catch on fire and ran to rescue the woman. John worked on extinguishing the car fire while Evan jumped on the hood and tore the cloth top off the Jeep.

They were able to get her out and she was taken to an area hospital with non life-threatening – but serious-injuries.

Maryland State Police are still investigating the accident.

18-wheeler flips on I-95, shuts down Beltway

December 15, 2009

An accident Thursday afternoon on northbound I-95, just above Route 4 near Forestville, has shut down all northbound traffic until further notice, according to Maryland State Police.

At around 5 p.m., the unidentified driver of an 18-wheeler tractor-trailer carrying a full load of plywood braked suddenly, flipping his truck over and sending the load out onto the highway, according to a state trooper who did not wish to be named.

The amount of wood released onto the road was enough to shut down all northbound traffic, said Mark Brady, a spokesman for the Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department. Diesel fuel from the truck also spilled onto the road, and a hazardous materials team has been dispatched to clean that up as well, he said.

The driver was trapped inside the cab following the crash, but state police said he was freed shortly before 6 p.m.

State police estimated it would take until at least 7 p.m. to clean up the accident site and reopen all lanes.

State police are urging drivers to find alternative routes. The last exit before the accident site is Allentown Road and the first entranceway available after the crash site is at Ritchie Marlboro Road.

Man dies in crash at I-95 ramp to Beltway when it collided with a tractor-trailer truck. Dec 1, 2009

December 2, 2009

A man died in an early-morning crash Tuesday in Havre de Grace on southbound Interstate 95 at the eastbound ramp to Interstate 695, according to Maryland State Police. Police responded to the scene about 6:40 a.m. and found that a pickup truck had collided with a tractor-trailer at the ramp.

The driver of the pickup, 62-year-old Harvey Fisher, died at the scene, while the driver of the tractor-trailer, Raymond Shelton Jr., 53, of Lincoln, Del., suffered minor injuries, police said. Troopers say Fisher was driving his pickup south on I-95 in the left lane when he swerved across several lanes, apparently to get to the exit to the Beltway. His vehicle was hit by Shelton’s tractor-trailer, then spun out of control and overturned.

A truck driver has been charged in a crash that shut down Md. 27 on Tuesday Nov. 17,2008 .

November 19, 2009

Israel Perez, 52, of the 13000 block of Southwest 157th Street in Miami was charged with negligent driving, failure to control speed to avoid a collision and a logbook violation of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, said Lt. Andrew Winner, commander of the Westminster barrack of the Maryland State Police.

Perez’s 2003 Freightliner tractor-trailer was traveling north on Md. 27 near Manchester when it hit a 1989 Chevrolet pickup from behind. The pickup, driven by Roger Pugh, 52, of the 2900 block of Holland Drive in Manchester, had slowed down to turn left onto Westminster Street and had its turn signal on, according to a release from Maryland State Police.

The tractor and its 2005 utility trailer were both registered to Caribe Trucking Express of Miami, Winner said.

The tractor-trailer pushed the Chevrolet into the path of a 2001 Dodge pickup driven by Harry Sigler, 39, of the 12000 block of Boncrest Drive in Reisterstown.

The collision pushed the Dodge into a guardrail along the southbound side of Md. 27.

Perez declined medical treatment at the scene. Sigler was treated and released at Carroll Hospital Center, while Pugh was flown to University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center. No information on his condition was available Wednesday evening.

A section of eastbound Interstate 70 in Frederick County was closed Tuesday morning due to a multivehicle accident in the area of Bill Moxley Road, Maryland State Police said in a news release.

The crash, which involved two tractor-trailers and a pickup truck, occurred at 4:03 a.m., police said.

All eastbound lanes and shoulders of I-70 were closed while debris was cleared from the road, police said. All lanes were open again by 9 a.m.

The initial investigation revealed a 1998 International tractor-trailer hauling metal railing jackknifed for unknown reasons, causing the metal railing to scatter across all eastbound lanes, the release said. The driver was identified as Benjamin Grimes of West Virginia.

A 2005 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Dean Boyd of Garrett County, Md., then collided with the tractor-trailer, police said.

A 2007 Volvo tractor-trailer driven by Jeffrey Hester of Missouri, then collided with several large pieces of the metal railing, rupturing the truck’s fuel tank, police said.

All vehicles involved were towed from the scene. Firefighters responded to the scene to remove the fuel spill from the roadway surface and State Highway Association workers assisted with traffic control, police said.
